The historic NSW number plate ’29’ has beaten out rare and classic cars to fetch the highest price at auction overnight – with the hammer falling at a bid of $745,000.
This price was almost $200,000 higher than initial estimates, and eclipses the previous auction record for NSW plate ‘2’ from 14 years ago.
To put it into perspective, that’s around what you would expect to pay for a brand-new Rolls-Royce Ghost… for just a number plate.
According to historic records, the ’29’ number plate once belonged to a Mr. MacCormick of Macquarie Street, Sydney and adorned a 26HP Minerva.
The purchase could actually be quite a good investment with low number, double digit plates seldom coming onto the market, as they are usually passed down through families and generations and rarely sold privately.
